Impervious surfaces are surfaces that do not allow water to pass through. These surfaces occur in areas of development where roads, sidewalks, and parking lots are made of impenetrable materials such as asphalt and concrete. Heavy machinery used in these developments also compacts the soil making it highly impenetrable.
