COLLEGEVILLE — If you've been fishing lately on the Perkiomen Creek near where the old Collegeville Dam once stood, you may have noticed something missing.

Recently, a task force organized by the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy removed a large tank lodged underwater near the eastern shore for many years. The tank became visible when the dam was removed and the water level dropped. For the past couple of years, staff from the conservancy have been watching the tank to see if circumstances would change to more easily permit its removal.

That happened over the winter when ice, highwater or streambank erosion dislodged the old tank and it started moving downstream, according to a release from the conservancy.

So, on April 2, the tank was removed by Gene Reider, Mike Faith, Brandon Smith and Steve Ohrwaschel of The Lewis Group in Royersford.

Using pry bars to loosen the tank, which had partially filled with sediment and water, the tank was moved closer to the bank and cut into pieces.

With several holes in it, the tank was empty of whatever substance it once held.

Also helping was AquaPA, Collegeville Borough and Lower Providence Township.

The removal was an early kick-off for a less strenuous stream cleanup that was conducted Saturday by an army of volunteers up and down the Perkiomen, the largest tributary of the Schuylkill River.
