A New Approach to Protecting Water Resources
The PWC has launched a new approach to protecting water resources. We will still be conducting our great environmental education programs and working with property owners to restore streambanks & buffers. But we need to get our message out to more people and businesses throughout our 362 square mile watershed.
The goal of the Perkiomen Project is to expand awareness about the critical benefits that our communities receive from the Perkiomen Creek, its tributaries and the natural open spaces that protect local water quality.
Three Eco-Philosophies summarize the overall message:
Water is Life: High quality source water is critical to our overall quality of life.
Love Your Stormwater: Precipitation is the only water available for recharging our local aquifers. Let’s not waste it!
Connecting to Nature: Experiencing nature firsthand supports a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle.
Business leaders from throughout the region gathered September 26, 2007 to help launch the Perkiomen Project. They were hosted by Ross Myers at the headquarters of American Infrastructure in Worcester. The reception was co-hosted by the “Protectors of the Perkiomen” including Harleysville National Corporation, Cabot Supermetals, The H&K Group and Aqua Pennsylvania.
PWC Board Chair and Bursich Associates, Inc. partner, David Weissman noted that, “Water quality in the Perkiomen Creek has improved greatly from a generation ago and the Perkiomen Project will help ensure continued improvement for future generations.”
Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy Executive Director, Crystal Gilchrist emphasized the need for committed partnerships with businesses because, “As chief decision makers in our communities, business leaders have the potential to make a great statement about how we value the environmental integrity of the Perkiomen watershed. Maintaining our watershed and the quality of life in our communities is key to economic growth.”
The PWC’s goal is to establish $100,000 a year in business support for the Perkiomen Project over the next five years. The Protectors of the Perkiomen are those businesses that have made a substantial, multi-year commitment to helping the PWC accomplish the goals of the Perkiomen Project. The Protectors include: Harleysville National Corporation, Cabot Supermetals, Aqua Pennsylvania, The H & K Group and American Infrastructure.
