Summer Science Academy

Summer Explorers

A week-long adventure for kindergarten – third grade students!
Do you like to... Investigate your world? Find natural “stuff”? Explore streams? Make new discoveries? Work on experiments? If this sounds interesting to you, then you’ll want to be a Summer Explorer at the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy! Since our Summer Explorer themes follow a four-year rotating schedule, you can join while you’re in kindergarten and continue through third grade, learning exciting new things each year. Our yearly themes include “Water”, “Animals”, “Plants” and “Abiotics”.   During the summer of 2008 we will be studying:  Water, Water Everywhere!

So, what is water, “really”? Experiment with water in its three states, search for water in the foods you eat, examine (and experience!) the depth, color, and life in the Perkiomen Creek, perform a water cycle skit, create your own watershed model, and … so much more. Count on getting wet!

Summer Afield
A week-long adventure for fourth – sixth grade students.
You will want to join Summer Afield and make this one summer to remember! Since our themes follow a three-year rotating schedule, you can join the program while you are in fourth grade and continue through sixth grade, learning exciting new things each year. Our yearly themes include “Watersheds”, “The Perkiomen Creek: Past, Present, and Future” and “Habitats”.

During the summer of 2008, Summer Afielders will focus on "The Perkiomen Creek: Past, Present, and Future."  Join us as we travel through time, beginning with the age of dinosaurs. Acquaint yourself with the days of the Lenape Indians and the Pennsylvania Dutch; delve into the impact of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; and trace the creek’s evolution to this day. We will make predictions about future impacts on this unique body of water and immerse ourselves in the many stories that make the Perkiomen Creek our natural treasure.

Exploring the East Branch

A full day experience for kindergarten - 6th grade students.
Just can't get enough of the creek? Spend a full day with us as we investigate the East Branch Creek up close and personal. Through active explorations, games, songs, books and crafts, we will take the day to examine this most incredible ecosystem. Your mission: conduct a macroinvertebrate survey to find out who lives in the creek; investigate the role that physical and chemical factors play in determining its health; trace the flow of energy as it moves through an aquatic food chain; with the assistance of our TeachCam and microscope, identify critical adaptations which help these organisms survive. Bring your brown bag lunch and a drink, your extra dry clothes and a towel. Rest well the night before because you will be active from the moment you arrive!
